This Derby in the BBC 2 Floodlit Trophy was meant to have been played the day before but was postponed due to Fog. Quickly re-arranged within 24 hours, but no longer televised, an excellent contest was fought out. Tries from John Stephens and Colin Tyrer had helped Wigan build up a 12-3 Half Time lead with Saints only response coming from Tom van Vollenhoven. Saints hit back early after the break with a try from Tommy Bishop and conversion from John Mantle making it 12-8 but Wigan responded with tries from Billy Boston and Colin Clarke and were comfortable for the rest of the game with a 22-8 advantage. Tony Barrow try for Saints only a late consolation.
