Salford had already claimed the scalp of holders St Helens by winning a replay at Knowsley Road in Round 1 and now they looked at sending 1965 Cup Winners Wigan out of the competition. The first half was tight with no tries score. Salford led 6-2 though with McInnes kicking two drop goals and Sims one penalty with Eric Ashton responding with a penalty for Wigan. In the Second Half Ashton kicked a second penalty for 6-4 but Bettinson's try, being a hesitant Keith Holden, put Salford 11-4 up. Wigan kicked a third penalty to reduce that lead to 11-6 (one converted try) and they looked favourites to claim a draw when Salford's prop Collier was sent off "stupidly for striking" after being warned. Instead though Salford eased worry with a try. McInnes dummied a drop goal attempt and instead Brennan broke and send Ogden over. Sims converted for 16-6 and then sealed the tie with a penalty to complete an 18-6 succes.
