The Second Round draw had been held prior to the replays and would see Wigan or Warrington host St Helens or Salford, which had also gone to replay. A huge prospect of a derby so soon after Wigan's humbling off them at Wembley the previous season. However by the night of this replay, Saints fate was already known as they had lost 8-3 to Salford on the Tuesday. Wigan had come back from 15-4 down to force a replay in the first match but in this one, Wigan won easily. It was not all great though with Eric Ashton suffering a rib injury and Cliff Hill becoming a "passenger" due to tendon problems during the second half.
