Wigan hadn't won the Lancashire Cup since 1951 and thus it remained the only medals that had eluded the great duo of Billy Boston and Eric Ashton. This then was a big opportunity to rectify that and Wigan got off to a great start with one newspaper describing "Oldham's goose was cooked in the first ten minutes". That was to say that they had started strongly but hadn't managed to score and Wigan ended up counter attacking to lead with a try from Boston on their first attack of the match. For the rest of the match, Oldham kept close to Wigan but it was mainly on the back of penalty kicks than tries. Wigan won 16-13 in the end with them having got four tries to one. So Boston and Ashton completed their medal collections whilst Wigan won their 14th Lancashire Cup.
