The Lancashire Cup draw gave an early chance of revenge
for Wigan having been humiliated at Wembley by Saints at the end of the
previous season. It was revenge that was not expected though with Wigan
having performed poorly during most of the season so far. However, they were
faring far better when Colin Clarke was available and he was in the side for
this one. The tie was played on a night in which heavy torrential
rain poured from an hour before kick off and throughout the game. Saints had
led 7-2 in the first half after a try and two goals from Len Killeen but two
penalties from Laurie Gilfedder brought Wigan back to 7-6 at the half. The
wind/rain advantage was in Wigan's favour after the break and early in the
half a superb long pass from Eric Ashton sent Billy Boston over and
Gilfedder converted to put Wigan 11-7 ahead. Killeen reduced that to 11-9
with another penalty but it proved not to be enough. Wigan hung on.
