Summary: |
Generally reported as a poor, awful final that was a humiliating
experience for Wigan. In an era of no tackle counts, they struggled all
match to get possession from scrums with ex Wigan hooker Bill Sayer for
St Helens dominating his makeshift hooking opponent Tom Woosey, who had to play at 9 because Colin Clarke was suspended.
Harold Mather in the Guardian described Wigan's efforts as "dreadfully disappointing" with the defence "feeble".
Alas, Wigan would have to wait a full 23 years to gain revenge for this one
and this results explains why the 1989 27-0 Wembley win meant so much, particularly
to the Wigan fans that suffered watching on this day! Wigan's season had
really fallen apart with Clarke's suspension, Saints going on to complete
the league and cup double a week later against Halifax. |
