Wigan were in the headlines over TV coverage with them refusing to allow BBC Grandstand to cover the following Saturday's Cup Tie away at Bradford. The fear of televised sport affecting attendances was highlighted here by the match kicking off in the evening at 5:30pm because the BBC were televising both the Grand National and Boat Race during the afternoon. Several clubs on this day opted for a later kick off believing those events would harm the attendance. A healthy crowd of over 22,000 attended though to see this game that had been frozen off at Christmas. Saints had both Tom van Vollenhoven and Alex Murphy missing injured and although they took a 3-0 lead with a John Mantle try, they trailed 15-3 by half time with two tries from Trevor Lake and one try from Billy Boston contributing. The only try of the second half was scored by Saints but it wasn't enough to make Wigan sweat on their victory.

Half Time:

Wigan 15 St Helens 3
