This was a match that was huge towards the destiny of who
finished top (albeit the champion would be decided by play off) and also
which of the two sides won the Lancashire League trophy. Wigan had beaten
Saints in both league and cup earlier in the season but it would be Saints
who would take this Easter derby. Injuries were proving a problem for Wigan.
Roy Evans had "severly" cut his thumb the day before the game and was
replaced by Geoff Lyon. Then during the match, John Barton suffered a broken arm
after just 18 minutes that would later rule him out of
playing the Cup Final at Wembley. Ray Ashby, Laurie Gilfedder and Colin
Clarke were also limping about during this game and it was proving that
Wembley was very much on the minds. Saints took the lead when Billy Benyon
sent Alex Murphy under the posts for Len Killeen to convert for 5-0.
