Summary:l |
A tough cup tie for Wigan who in the Quarter Finals had to go up to Workington
for a repeat of the 1958 Wembley Final. It was tight for over half hour
(Laurie Gilfedder had missed two penalty shots) until Wigan took the lead in
the 33rd Minute. A kick failed to find touch and Trevor Lake gathered and
started a move that swept from his left wing towards the right. Eventually
it was Roy Evans who sent Colin Clarke over and Gilfedder converted for a
5-0 half time lead. Workington came out strong second half but Southward was
denied twice by great tackles by Lake. Southward however did kick two
penalties to reduce Wigan's lead to just 5-4. That score carried into the
final ten minutes when Wigan found a second wind to clinch the tie. A kick
return break from Ray Ashby set up the position. On half way he passed to
the supporting Cliff Hill who beat three defenders in running the other half
of the field. Crucially he cut back inside to make the kick easy for
Gilfedder and the two score lead held out at 10-4. |
