This was a huge cup tie between league leading Wigan (42 points from 26 games) and second place St Helens (40 points from 22 games). Just short of 40,000 packed into Central Park to witness a very tight tie that saw only a penalty goal from Laurie Gilfedder trouble the scoreboard in the first half. Kel Coslett kicked a penalty to equalise early after the break but the winning score ended up being set up by Brian McTigue. He made a bust towards the half way line and offloaded to send Roy Evans racing away from 45 metres. Billy Benyon was desperately chasing Evans down but he couldn't be stopped and he managed to finish with Gilfedder converting for 7-2. Saints only repost was a penalty shot from Coslett but he missed and thus no further scoring occurred. One Newspaper summed up the match by saying Saints had been "humbled" with "McTigue holding the master key".
