In a season in which the title was decided by
first past the post, Wigan were needing the victory badly here with Swinton
chasing them down for the title. Saints had built up a 9-0 lead by Half Time
after a try from Alex Murphy and three goals from Kel Coslett. That score
remained until the 65th Minute when Wigan found some hope from a Billy
Boston try that was converted by Laurie Gilfedder for a 9-5 score. Saints
hung on and Coslett kicked a penalty to seal it two minutes from the end. So
it proved to be a bad loss for Wigan. The defeat meant that their five point
lead over Swinton at the top of the table was reduced to three as they had
beaten Warrington 12-3 at Station Road. Swinton held 4 matches in hand over Wigan, so any
further defeats now would be costly.
