Summary:l |
This was a cup tie between the current
champions and league leaders Swinton and Wigan in second place. Wigan got
off to a fantastic start with Alan Davies scoring an 8th Minute try after
good work from John Stephens and a final pass from Stan McLeod. The
conversion was missed but Laurie Gilfedder kicked a goal for 5-0 before
Brian Shillinglaw was sent under the posts for a second Wigan try after good
combination Bill Sayer, Brian McTigue, Stephens and Davies. Easy conversion
for Gilfedder made it 10-0 after 26 minutes. Swinton though would rally late
in the half with a penalty from Blan soon being added to be a try from
Stopford. Six minutes after the interval Gilfedder kicked a penalty for 12-5
but by the hour it was 15-12 to Swinton with two quick fire tries from Speed
and William. Wigan were now chasing the game but in the 69th Minute miss
communication between Stopford and Buckley defending Gilfedder's "up and
under" kick allowed Billy Boston to pounce and score. Gilfedder couldn't
kick Wigan into the lead and in the end Wigan would be better for a replay
because Swinton missed a late penalty and drop goal chance to Gowers. The
sides would play again the following Wednesday at Station Road. |
