Wembley was at stake with Wigan meeting Hull KR on a poor and muddy Headingley pitch. It was a tight first half with the wind in Hull KR's favour but they chose on a few occasions not to take penalty goal shots and perhaps regretted this later. They did take the lead with a Kellett penalty but Wigan went ahead just before half time with good combination from Alan Davies and Eric Ashton getting Dave Bolton over for a try. In the second half Wigan had the wind at their backs but it was only in the final quarter that they ran amok with Davies completing a second half hat-trick.

Poor Weather earlier in the season had pushed the Challenge Cup being schedule. The Semi Finals were originally due to be played on Saturday April 6th.
