Wigan finally returned to action after a horrible winter had seen them, and most Rugby League clubs, without action for two and half months. 76 days in fact since Wigan last played a competitive fixture, this Challenge Cup tie at Hull was finally on 26 days after it should have been first played. The break had been so long that Wigan played a friendly at Leigh on the Monday prior to this game to gain some match fitness, that match being arranged after a proposed friendly game against Blackpool the Saturday prior had been called off late due to a pay dispute. Rustiness was still on show in this cup tie, played on a Thursday at 4:15. The only score of the first half was a penalty goal from Eric Ashton for 2-0. He doubled the lead with another penalty for 4-0 and that score held all the way until the 78th Minute when Stan McLeod sent Billy Boston racing away from the half way line to score the games only try.
