With the postponement of the Christmas Fixture this was the first of two derbies within eight days with that earlier fixture being re-arranged for the following week. Wigan had to work hard for this one after trailing 11-4 during the first half. Wigan took the lead with twenty minutes to go after a magnificent try from Frank Carlton, ex of Saints, in which he went half the length of the field.

St Helens 11 Wigan 9
