Summary:l

A highly anticipated cup tie at Belle Vue between the sides that were 1st and 2nd in the League Table. They had also battled out two league encounters in recent weeks which had seen one win apiece. The game was tight as a drum with just a penalty goal apiece first half. The BBC were in town to televise the second half on "Grandstand" and within two minutes of the restart they saw a dropped goal from Eric Ashton, "that hit both posts and the crossbar" before going over to give Wigan a 4-2 lead. It wasn't long though before the games only try went Wakefield's way from Smith in the 50th minute and that proved to be that.

Half Time:l Wakefield 2 Wigan 2
Referee:l D.T.H Wilkinson (Manchester)
Television:l Second Half was shown Live on BBC TV during "Grandstand"

Note:l Crowd scenes for the 1963 Film "This Sporting Life" were filmed during this fixture.
