This was a 1st v 2nd clash between two sides who both had
long unbeaten league records. Wigan hadn't lost since September whilst
Wakefield's run went back to August, although they had drawn 0-0 away at
Batley the week before this match. So this had been a long awaited clash and
it was Wakefield who got the victory in an hard fought encounter. They had
been much the better side, building up a 9-0 lead before Wigan got going.
Two penalty goals, either side of a converted try by Hirst, had that 9-0
lead built up by the 25th Minute but Wigan had done well to get back to 9-7
before half time. Griffiths reduced it with a penalty before Frank Carlton
scored a converted try. Early in the second half Wigan clawed level and then
ahead with two further penalties from Griffiths. So at 11-9 up they would
have been happy given the start to the match but a try from Fox, which he
converted, put them back into a 14-11 lead and they would see the game out
to the end.
This result left Wigan top of the table on 43 points with
Wakefield in second on 41 points but Wakefield held a game in hand.
