With six players called up to the Great Britain test
team, Wigan cancelled their game the previous Saturday when Great Britain
ended up being spanked in the first test by New Zealand 29-11 at Headingley.
Now seven days later here New Zealand were in town to play Wigan. They
called up eleven of their test thirteen whilst Wigan had all their test
stars back bar Billy Boston. Given what had happened the week before, you'd
have expected another New Zealand win but Wigan produced a super display.
One criticial key to this though was the sending off of New Zealand's full
back Fagan in the 21st Minute for tripping Geoff Bootle. Wigan already led
8-0 at that point to be fair but it made it easier I'm sure. That 8-0 became
12-2 at half time and the game went ugly not long after the restart. The
Kiwis' stand off Bond had been laid low in a tackle and it all kicked off.
The game was spoiled up until the hour mark but Wigan caught New Zealand
tired in the end with 16 points scored in the final quarter of a game in
which Alan Davies, signed from Oldham, made his debut at left centre.
