Summary:l

24 hours before this Lancashire Cup tie, six Wigan players (Billy Boston, Eric Ashton, Dave Bolton, John Barton, Bill Sayer & Brian McTigue) had been called up for the First Great Britain v New Zealand Test Match which was to follow on September 30th. So that was perhaps an incentive for Widnes here, who had no call ups, with Wigan calling upon all six players. Wigan had taken an early lead when a Ged Lowe error was pick up by Geoff Bootle who sent Frank Collier over under the posts for a 5-0 score after Griffiths converted. The surprise was that Wigan never scored again. Two penalties from Bob Randall reduced that lead to 5-4 before half time and a try from Lowe, making up for his earlier error, put Widnes 7-5 up in the second half. The clock began ticking away and Wigan panicked and Widnes went on to win with Randall adding a third penalty goal.
