This was a hard slog of a cup final on a hot day at
Wembley. Fred Griffiths had given Wigan a 2-0 lead but Austin Rhodes
equalised with a penalty of his own before Alex Murphy scored a try after
good work from Dick Huddart. That put Saints 5-2 ahead at the break. Wigan
dominated the first ten minutes after half time but could only find a
penalty goal from Griffiths for their efforts. A try for Frank Carlton
brought back for an earlier forward pass, Griffiths hit the post with a
penalty goal and Billy Boston was denied a try by the corner flag. So Saints
still led 5-4 and went further ahead on 21 minutes from a Wigan error. Bill
Sayer knocked on ten metres from the Saints line and interchange passing
between Tom van Vollenhoven and Ken Large saw the former finish despite a
good chase back by Eric Ashton. That put Saints 10-4 ahead and they never
looked back.
