A week after meeting in the league, Wigan and Halifax met again in a Challenge Cup Semi Final played at Station Road in Swinton. Halifax had started brightly but failed to get points on the board. Then in the 17th Minute Brian McTigue produced a brilliant offload off the ground to Geoff Bootle who ran himself to score rather than passing to Frank Carlton. Fred Griffiths converted for 5-0. Later Billy Boston scored a converted try that helped Wigan to a 10-2 half time lead. Although Halifax found two tries second half, Wigan managed to get three and they controlled their own destiny throughout.
