Leeds away was always a tough cup draw and perhaps Wigan were happy with to take a draw back to Central Park. The match was played in a rain-storm which made conditions difficult. Leeds took the lead in the 9th Minute with a try from Hallas and the only other scoring in the first half was a penalty goal added by Jones for a 5-0 lead. Wigan had it all to do but scored in the 48th Minute when Dave Bolton, on a diagonal run, beat two men and sent Geoff Bootle over in the right corner. Griffiths failed to convert, so the score was 5-3. Then on 57 minute Wigan's task got harder. Bill Sayer was sent off for "an attempted trip" on Leeds' winger Rosenberg. Wigan were starved of possession a man down but got a penalty goal on 70 minutes to which Griffiths made it 5-5. You'd think Wigan would take the draw being a man down but they almost snatched victory in the last minute when Syd Fenton's fly kick down field produced a "all or nothing" try saver from Rosenberg. The game ended a draw with a replay to follow back at Wigan.
