To qualify for the play offs, Wigan needed to win here
whilst hoping Hull and Featherstone failed in their remaining games. They
were made to sweat here by Swinton without Dave Bolton, Bill Sayer and Frank
Collier who were injured. In fact their refusal to announced their team
before kick off was described as "childish". Wigan took the lead when Mick
Sullivan slipped an offload away to get Brian McTigue over and then failure
by Swinton to dead with a kick allowed Tommy Smales to score another try.
This helped Wigan into a 12-4 lead after just 25 minutes. Swinton thought
fought back to 12-12 before half time but Griffiths kicked a penalty goal
right before the whistle to restore Wigan's lead. In the second half Swinton
levelled the scores up at 14-14 but Wigan re-established a slender lead when
a penalty goal from Griffiths hit the bar and still went over. That proved
to be enough for Wigan to win, with that being defended out somehow until
the end.
