Fred Griffiths and Billy Boston were absent for Wigan but
they still managed to see off a spirited Widnes showing at Central Park.
Widnes held a 5-2 lead during the first half with a Derek Heyes try being
converted but right on half time Bill Bretherton scored, to which Eric
Ashton converted for a 7-5 half time score for Wigan. Widnes re-took the
lead second half with a try from Frank Myler being converted by Harry
Dawson. But Wigan found a second try from Eric Ashton and two extra penalty
goals compared to Widnes would see them get their first victory of the
