Summary:l |
Heavy Rain during the morning of the match made
conditions extremely difficult for this Semi Final at Swinton's Station
Road. That rain left a really heavy pitch which turned the match into a
forwards battle and this led to quite a dull match with long periods of very
little happening. The first score of the match only came in the 37th Minute
with a penalty goal from Jackie Cunliffe kicking Wigan into a 2-0 lead at
half time. That lead was then increased to 5-0 on the back of quality play
from Eric Ashton. 90 yards from the try line he headed across from his right
centre position towards the left and found a gap to break clear. He then
drew in Rochdale Full Back Cahill before slipping a perfect pass to the
supporting Mick Sullivan seven yards from the try line. Cunliffe failed to
convert so Rochdale were within a score and when Fishwick fed Corsi for a
score in the 57th Minute, the Hornets had a kick to level. The conversion
failed and that proved costly. Wigan attacked for the most part in the final
23 minutes but never found a way to kill off Rochdale. Brian McTigue had a
late score ruled out for failure to ground the ball but it didn't matter,
Wigan saw out the match to reach Wembley for the sixth time. |
