Rugby League Nines Series: Matchnight 4

Rugby League 9s Series - West Division Match Night 4
Tuesday 19th June 201
2 at Co-Operative Stadium, Orrell.

9s Series Rule Variations

  • Matches are nine a side played 7 and half minutes each way. Interchanges are unlimited with all squad members available in each game.
  • Their are no scrums. Simple turnover restarts play after a mistake or the end of a tackle set.
  • Usual scoring of 4 points per try and 2 points per conversion (which is dropped kicked).
  • However instead of option for a conversion, teams have the option to opt for a "powerplay" which gives them one tackle to score an additional try from the 10-metre line instead. Powerplay tries are worth 4 points.
  • After a try conversion, or successful power play try, the game restarts on half way with a tap for the side that has just conceded. However if a power play has been attempted and failed, the side that has just conceded gains 10 free metres, thus being able to tap on the oppositions 40 metre line.
  • Restarts are not controlled. You can race to restart quickly after a score and if the defence ain't ready - tough luck!

Wigan Match Night 4 Squad

1 Jack Murphy, 2 Joe Burgess, 3 George Williams, 4 John O'Donnell, 5 Ryan King, 6 Ryan Hampshire, 7 Scott Leatherbarrow, 8 Dom Crosby, 9 Joe Bullock, 10 Greg Burke, 11 Iain Thornley, 12 Matty Crow, 14 Andrew Cunningham, 15 Liam Carberry, 17 James Greenwood, 19 Lewis Tierney

Night Summary

Wigan went into the Orrell 9s already qualified for Finals Night next Tuesday at Headingley but opponents Warrington, Cumbria and St Helens were all left fighting for the four places in offer. London were also in contention for the top 4 but they we're playing the round held at Salford.

As it turned out, none of the sides could beat Wigan. Warrington went behind after just 8 seconds to a Joe Burgess try and never recovered. Cumbria gave Wigan a good test in our middle match whilst St Helens could have progressed ahead of Cumbria had they beaten us in the final match of the night, but they never competed.

In the other games, Warrington beat both Cumbria and St Helens to progress whilst a try right on the hooter for Cumbria in their match against St Helens proved to be the difference between both sides qualification for finals night. Had Saints held for a draw in that one they would have made it, but in the end they miss out for the second year in a row.

Finals Night is at Headingley next Tuesday Night from 6:00pm. The whole event will be televised Live on Premier Sports.
