Match Preview: Crusaders (A) - 1st May 2011 at Racecourse Ground, Wrexham
Posted by Bilko on April 29 2011 - 14:16

Crusaders v Wigan Warriors - Engage Super League XVI Round 13.
Sunday 1st May 2011. Kick Off 3:00pm at Racecourse Ground, Wrexham.

Match Preview

If you look at the last six form table further down this page, Wigan still look to be way off the pace but three wins in a row have shown us signs that the Martin Gleeson and Michael Maguire leaving distractions are now behind us.

We still have a long way to go to reach last year's standards but I think we are starting to move towards that. Having a settled side, and the fixture list becoming easier, is certainly helping, but the biggest indicator of improvement is that our three-quarters have combined to cross the line for 10 tries in the last three matches compared to just 16 tries in the first nine games of the season.

That improvement you probably think is down simply to the return of one Pat Richards but not really because it was the right wing in which we were struggling and that has now started to motor since Joel Tomkins moved out there on a regular basis. He is showing signs of becoming a strong, powerful, classy centre.

Defensively we've been good all season, apart from the trio of games when we played Warrington, Leeds and Catalan, but last week was something else. The defensive display at Huddersfield was one thing but to keep Wakefield to nil in hot humid weather just three days after a massive derby against Saints in hot humid weather was an immense effort from the lads.

This week we make the short trip to Wrexham for a clash against Crusaders. I know they beat Huddersfield last week but I've got to be honest, I can only see a big Wigan win. They have class from the likes of Jarrod Sammut, Michael Witt and Clinton Schifcofske but the pack looks really poor to me, even more so with Richard Moore and Jordan James absent as well as experienced hooker Lincoln Withers.

So not much else to say on this one. Just get out there Wigan and rip them up. 28-0 after 20 minutes like last year would be just the ticket. Hope the sun is shining again like last year because a huge Wigan following looks to be in tow again - bring it on!
