Under 21s: Betts' youngsters cruise again!
Posted on Saturday, April 05 2003 @ 14:49:53 BST by Bilko
It took ten minutes before Wigan broke through the Hull resistance.
Full
back Paul Ballard completed a good passing move on the right hand side
and two minutes later Luke Robinson increased the lead, again on the
right, making it 10-0 to Wigan.
Hull FC then had Matt McGuire
carried off screaming in agony with what looked like a dislocated
shoulder. Dean O'Loughlin had gone off earlier with damaged knee
ligaments.
The long three or four minute delay for the injury
stopped our building momentum dead and it was a while before it built
up again.
After Hull kicked a penalty, Ricky Bibey powered his way over underneath the sticks on the half hour to increase our lead.
But
with half time approaching Hull were allowed to score thier only try of
the afternoon as Mick Sutton went over making the half time score 16-8.
In the second half Wigan stepped up two or three gears and ran riot.
The
first try was from Shaun Briscoe, who played a good chunk of this match
despite being part of the first team defeat in Hull on Friday. Tries
followed from scrum half Kevin Brown, Ballard with his second and
substitute Mark Throughton made the score 36-8 with twenty minutes
still remaining.
On 65 minutes second rower Harrison Hansen cut
through the middle and beat the Hull defence with a great dummy.
Throughton followed that up with his second bringing the score to 48-8.
Then came a brilliant individual effort from Desi Williams.
He collected a pass on half way burst down the wing beating two Hull defenders to score a great try!
Then in the final minute a tired looking Hull side couldn't find touch from a penalty.
Briscoe collected the ball deep inside his own half and great passing meant we went the length of the field in one tackle.
Kevin Brown finished off the move with his second afternoon of the afternoon.
Good performance from the lads today which sets them up nicely for the big Leeds game on Thursday Night.
