Wigan
Warriors v St Helens
-
Senior Academy
(Under 21s) Championship.
Saturday 1st March
2003. Kick Off
2:00pm at Edge Hall Road, Orrell Rugby Union.
Summary
Wigan Warriors opened their Senior Academy
Championship campaign with a 62-4 win over St Helens on Saturday, while
Salford and Halifax were also victorious on the opening weekend of the
season.
Saints' side, without a number of players who were on first team duty on
Friday night against Batley Bulldogs, were no match for a Wigan side who
began in fine form with 11 tries.
Stand off Kevin Brown was outstanding with a hat-trick of tries, while
Shaun Briscoe and Liam Colbon grabbed braces, with single touchdowns going
to Desi Williams, Chris Melling, Luke Robinson and Martin Kenyon.
Melling added nine goals for a personal haul of 22 points, while Chris
Maye scored a second half consolation for Saints. The Senior Academy
hammered Saints for the second year in a row at Orrell this afternoon.
Our lads won 62-4 bettering last years 62-38 win.
Earlier today I
spoke to Brian Foley who has been a key element in Wigan's youth setup set
who was impressed with the players attitudes more than the score:
"I was impressed by the way these lads are developing more than the score"
said Brian. "A lot are these lads are part of the under 18's side rather
than the 21's but they all performed well. Denis, Shaun (Wane) and David
(Banks) are doing a fantastic job."
