Wigan fought back from a 10-0 deficit to beat the Castleford Tigers 23-16 at
the Jungle in their final league game of 2003.
The third-placed Warriors
now take on neighbours Warrington at the JJB on Saturday in their first play-off
The Tiger’s raced ahead in the first-half with tries from Waine
Pryce and Andy Johnson before Terry O’Connor grabbed one back for the Warriors
But two tries in three minutes from Brett Dallas and David Hodgson gave them the
lead which they never lost.
JJB-bound Danny Orr tantalised the Wigan
travelling fans with an assured halfback performance and he dispelled any
suggestions he might have mixed allegiances when he forced his way over the
whitewash in the 73rd minute to cut the gap to three points.
Tickle’s last minute try secured the Wigan win. Regardless of the result Wigan
were always going to finish in third position after Leeds defeat of Hull the
previous evening but the players still showed the passion and pride in their
jerseys that has been evident since Gregory took control and explains why the
side remains unbeaten under him.
He said: “Credit must go to Castleford.
They showed a lot of commitment and we knew it was going to be tough and
"I gave the players a slap on the back for the result but we do
need to improve our ball control.
“I am not making excuses but over all I
think we had one eye on what happened at Hull last night. It was always going to
be a third-place finish for us after today's match.”
