15th August 2003: Leeds 24 Wigan 24
Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors Tetley's Super League VIII Round 23
Friday 15th August 2003. Kick Off 8:00pm at Headingley
CherryandWhite.co.uk Match Report by Rebecca Smith
Kevin Sinfield's last minute missed conversion meant the teams shared the spoils for the second time this season in a repeat of the scoreline of Wigan's last trip to Headingley in May.

Leeds coach Daryl Powell said he would have put money on his captain converting Danny McGuire's late try but that agreed with Wigan boss Mike Gregory that it would have been unjust for Wigan to have come out of the dramatic encounter with nothing.

The result leaves Wigan still five points behind the second-placed Rhino's and retains caretaker coach Mike Gregory's unbeaten record.

Wigan had a ten-point advantage with ten minutes to go after a try from substitute Gareth Hock. But the Rhinos determination saw Matt Adamson grab a try back five minutes from time, which Sinfield did convert before young McGuire won the race to touchdown Andrew Dunneman's kick and levelled the scores.

Leeds exploited Wigan's frailty in the three-quarters and it was no surprise when Keith Senior opened the scoring after 12 minutes.

Wigan levelled with a Brian Carney try but the big centre was on hand again to send McGuire away down the wing to set up a try for Wigan old-boy David Furner.

But the battling Warriors drew level again when Danny Tickle was put through a gap by the young Wigan half-back pair of O'Loughlin and Robinson.

But Wigan went into the break trailing 14-12 and a man down after Martin Aspinwall was sin-binned for holding keith senior down after another break down the left channel. Sinfield successful with the penalty goal.

Despite being one-man down Wigan snatched the lead for the first time with Tickle's second try, thanks to a powerful burst from on-form Farrell and good work from Lam's deputy, Luke Robinson.

Farrell's accurate kick put the Warriors 18-14 up. Leeds spurned two chances to draw level again, first former Wigan legend Gary Connolly broke free but kicked rather than passed to his support then McGuire just couldn't take in Danny Ward's neat pass to set him loose.

Martin Aspinwall had a try disallowed for putting a foot in touch just before grounding the ball in the corner but Gareth Hock's try was good and Robinson, who took the kicking responsibility from Farrell after he left the field with a dead leg, added the extra two points for a ten point lead.

each side had a try disallowed before Adamson and McGuire's efforts forced the draw.

Mike Gregory felt there was a hint of obstruction over the Rhinos' last try but overall agreed it was a fair result. He said; "I would like to look at the video but I don't want to take anything away from Leeds because they played for the duration of the game,"

"it would a massive injustice for the boys if we had got nothing out of the game. I felt it was a point lost."

"But they showed pride and passion and a belief in what we're trying to change at the club."
