Captain returns to win it
Andy Farrell marked his return from injury with a match winning drop goal a
minute from time.
The Wigan and Great Britain captain, playing in just
his second game of the season, looked to have salvaged a draw with his 56th
minute penalty goal, but the never say die spirit of the Warriors saw them grab
victory at the death.
Stuart Raper said: "It wasn't the greatest of
victories but sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn't. Tonight it was
our turn but I thought Warrington were a little unlucky."
"It was a tough
game and Warrington really took it too us. They played a very basic game and
made it tough.”
A mistake from full back Shaun Briscoe gave Warrington
the early advantage. He failed to collect a Lee Briers kick, which gave Sid
Domic the chance to pounce on the loose ball to score.
Wigan's reply came
on 23 minutes. Adrian Lam dropped his shoulder, found the gap and scampered over
from the 20 metre line to score.
Farrell converted to level the scores,
but the visitors took a 12-6 lead into half-time after poor defending from Jamie
Ainscough. The tall Australian winger was shamefully beaten to a high Lee Briers
kick by Rob Smyth. The former Wigan winger then palmed the ball to Brent Grosse
Then Briscoe bounced back from his early fumble and showed
he is an able deputy for Kris Radlinski, who is out for 12 weeks for a wrist
The 20-year-old scored two second half tries in quick
succession to put the Warriors 18-12 up.
But Lee Briers, who had kicked
superbly well all evening, splitting the Warriors defence many times, turned on
the magic to level the scores. A neat run-around with Mike Wainwright saw him
cut through and score. Briers converted his own try and then ten minutes later
looked to seal victory with two well worked drop goals.
ill-discipline from Warrington gave Farrell the opportunity to draw level with a
penalty before he sent the Wigan faithful into raptures with his one-point
