23rd March 2003: Wakefield 29 Wigan 34
Wakefield Wildcats v Wigan Warriors Tetley's Super League VII Round 3
Sunday 23rd March. Kick Off 3:30pm at Belle Vue.
CherryandWhite.co.uk Match Report by Rebecca Smith
Last Gasp win at Wakefield.

Stuart Raper promised his players a video nasty after they scraped a late victory in an exciting game at Belle Vue.

The Warriors were behind with ten minutes to go before tries from Adrian Lam and David Hodgson secured the points.

The Wigan coach said: 'Some blokes are going to cop it in the video session this week.'

'We had to rely on youth to get us through and they did.' And he issued a warning against complacancy saying: 'They just can't aford to be making errors when others are coming back because no-one has a mortgage on places in this team.'

The Belle Vue crowd were treated to a fascinating game which saw the lead change hands no fewer than six times.

Underdogs Wakefield opened the scoring on six minutes then mid-way through the half Wigan hit back with two tries.

But the visitors lead was short lived. Jamie Ainscough bought a scandalous dummy from Jon Wells which saw the former Castleford wingman score. Then on the half hour Brad Davis went over for four points and he added a one-pointer before the break to give the homeside an 18-12 advantage.

A penalty from Ian Knott moments after the restart extended the Wakefield lead but that was shortlived. The Warriors took control again thanks to tries from O'Neill and Aspinwall.

Another Knott penalty saw the game swing back to Wakefield and when Martyn Holland went over for the Wildcats fourth try of the afternoon on 66 minutes the home crowd were hopefull of a shock win.

Adrian Lam scored his second to narrow the Wakefield lead to a single point and David Hodgson's second try finally secured the Wigan win.

Although the result leaves Wakefield still searching for their first points of the current league campaign their coach, Shane McNally, was not dispondent. He said: 'The wins will come. We just have to remain positive though I am disappointed.

'We are improving and heading in the right direction. we just have to keep working hard.'
