9th February 2003: Wigan 82 Halton Simms Cross 3
Wigan Warriors v Halton Simms Cross Powergen Challenge Cup Round 4
Sunday 9th February 2003. Kick Off 3.00pm at JJB Stadium.
CherryandWhite.co.uk Match Report by Rebecca Smith
Wigan are in the fifth round of the Powergen Challenge Cup after seeing off amateur side Halton Simms Cross in a thoroughly professional performance on a sad day at the JJB Stadium.

Just hours before kick-off the club learned that two of its up and coming stars, Billie-Joe Edwards and Craig Johnson, had been killed in a car crash. An impecably observed silence was held for under-21 team mates before kick-off

The Widnes based amateur outfit was outclassed as Wigan ran in 15 tries but the Simmies players did not lack effort or enthusiasm and their coach, Chris Middlehurst, did have the pleasure of seeing his side take the first points.

Brian Capewell, the Simms Cross full-back took a drop-goal in the 6th minute and the former St Helens Academy Player scored his sides only other points, a penalty goal on 12 minutes.

The tie was over as a contest within the first quarter and Wigan averaged a point a minute in the first half with two tries each for both Newton and Radlinski. they wer joined on the try sheet by Aspinwall, Farrell, Hodgson and O'loughlin.

Farrell converted six of the eight tries.

In the second half wigan did not ease up on their opposition but to the surprise of most of the 3,790 crowd the amateurs did not tire dramatically. Dogged defence from Simmies kept the Warriors from scoring for ten minutes after the restart when Julian O'Neill scored a strong individual try.

Kris radlinski was the next player over the line to bring up his hat-trick. He looked fit and sharp for the season ahead. Further ties came from Farrell, O'loughlin, Wild, Carney and an uncharacteristic 60metre touchline effort from prop forward Ricky Bibey. Farrell converted five of the seven to take Wigan past the 80-point mark.

Coach Stuart Raper was pleased to get the game under his belt. After the game he said: 'We did some good things out there and we did some probably silly things but it was important for us to get a good hit out ahead of our game against Castleford next week.'

He added: 'It was very hard for the guys to play today after the sad news but they went out there and were very business like.'
