23rd March 1997: Castleford 14 Wigan 22

Castleford v Wigan - 1997 Super League II Round 2.
Sunday 23rd March 1997. Kick Off 6:30pm at Wheldon Road.

Match Report from www.theboltonnews.co.uk

Jason Robinson returned from injury to score a vital 69th minute try that swept Wigan towards a battling victory at Wheldon Road.

Little had been seen of Robinson on his first Super League appearance of the season until the winger popped up to take Sean Long's pass and bounce through from short range for a try near the posts.

Andy Farrell's goal made it 18-14 and with Castleford beginning to fade after a tremendous show, Simon Haughton powered in for the clinching try.

Haughton showed great finishing to crown an outstanding display by the young second row forward. he had opened Wigan's try-scoring in the 22nd minute with another powerful charge for the line and always took a lot of stopping.

Wigan also welcomed back Gary Connolly and while the centre put in plenty of effort without making any trademark breaks.

Castleford led 6-2 early on with a Jason Lidden try and Lee Crooks goal wiping out Farrell's penalty.

Tries to Haughton and Mick Cassidy put Wigan well in control until just before the break when Crooks sent Simon Middleton in by the posts to make it 12-12.

A Richard Goddard penalty put Cas ahead early in the second half, a lead they held until Robinson struck 11 minutes from time. Haughton's last minute try ended Castleford's gallant effort.
