Wigan RL History - 1916-17 Season
Click to View: 1915-1916 War Season or 1917-1918 War Season

It was a sad start to 1916-17 following the shock death of former player and captain Jim Leytham, who was perhaps the first legend of Wigan Rugby League. He died in a boating accident whilst fishing in Morecambe Bay on August 20th 1916 - several other members of his family also died. The main stand at Central Park would later be named in his honour along with Bert Jenkins. He was known to his fans as “Gentleman Jim of the Football Field” and was renowned for fair play and still to this day holds the record for most tries (four) in an Ashes Test Match, which he set in 1910 at Brisbane, although it was equalled later on by another Wigan legend by the name of Billy Boston.

During the 1st World War the Rugby League Championship, Challenge Cup and Lancashire Cup were suspended. Wigan continued to play a series of Friendlies during the conflict in a War Emergency League, the results were as follows.

Wigan Final League Position: 5th in War Emergency League
War League Champions
