Wigan RL History - 1973-74 Season

Click to View: 1972-1973 Season or 1974-1975 Season

1973-1974 saw two division rugby introduced. Wigan formed part of the 1st Division having finished in the top 16 to qualify in the previous season. The Championship play offs were done away with and the league leaders were declared the champions. A "Club Championship" was played in place of the play offs but this was a one off pre curser to what became the end of season Premiership. It was a complicated format that involved sides from both divisions. The Captain Morgan Trophy was played for the one and only time as well - contested by the first round winners of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Cups.
