In 1940-41 the normal Rugby League Championship was
suspended due to World War II. However play did continue in "War Emergency
Leagues". 1940-41 saw Wigan play in a Lancashire War League with the winner of
the Lancashire and Yorkshire war leagues meeting in a championship final to
decide the overall winner. This competition however did not count towards as an
official league championship.
A Lancashire Cup competition was planned to take
place from February 22nd but by the turn of the year many Lancashire Clubs were
struggling to fulfil fixtures. In early February the plans to hold a Lancashire
Cup were dropped and thus both Wigan and Oldham applied, and got accepted, to
play in the Yorkshire Cup. The Challenge Cup also returned after a one year
absence although players received "National Savings Certificates" on Cup Final
day rather than medals.
