The 1939-1940 Rugby League Season commenced as
scheduled on August 26th but was abandoned after just three matches after
Britain's declaration of War against Germany on September 3rd 1939. Wigan's results in that abandoned league campaign
were
as follows....
The results in the abandoned league were declared null and void and expunged
from records.
On September 11th the Rugby League Council met to discuss Wartime Rugby
League and it was decided soon after that teams would be permitted to organise
competition on a county basis. A Lancashire War Emergency League began on
September 30th with players playing on an amateur basis. The Challenge Cup was
not played for in this season.
Wigan Final League Position: 3rd in Lancashire War Emergency League (Coach:
Jim Sullivan) War League Champions: Bradford Northern (37-22 on aggregate v Swinton)
Lancashire War League Champions: Swinton Challenge Cup Winners: Not Held Lancashire Cup Winners: Swinton
(21-15 on aggregate v Widnes)
1939-1940 Lancashire War Emergency League
LC = Lancashire Cup
Due to the outbreak of World War 2, the league was split into local Lancashire
and Yorkshire leagues. A two legged play off between the winners of both leagues decided
the champions.
St Helens Recreation dropped out and did not return after the war.

Championship Playoffs:
Swinton 13 beat Bradford Northern 21.
Bradford Northern 16 beat Swinton 9.
Bradford Northern won 37-22 on aggregate.
Following the 1939-40 Season, some clubs attempted to carry on playing in a
"Summer Competition" but this venture was abandoned after just two fixtures.....
The Summer Competition had intended to be
two groups of four teams playing each other before the winners of each group
meeting in a final. But some teams struggled to raise players and the competition
was quickly abandoned with results being expunged from records.
