In this season Wigan played in Rugby League's first ever
Floodlit match when they met Leeds in an exhibition match at 8pm on Wednesday
December 14th at White City Stadium in London. Leeds won 18-9 in front of a
crowd of over 10,000 spectators. The venture was such a success that the owners
of the White City Ground took over the "Wigan Highfield" club and moved them to
play Rugby League games at the ground under floodlights the following season. This concept was way
ahead of its time with Bradford only becoming the first Northern Club to use
floodlights in 1951, whilst Wigan didn't install floodlights at Central
Park until 1967!
