10th September 2000: Wigan 54 Hull 4

Wigan Warriors v Hull - Tetley's Super League V Round 27
Sunday 10th September 2000. Kick Off 3:00pm at JJB Stadium

Teenage winger David Hodgson grabbed the first hat-trick of his career against his home-town club as Wigan roared back to the top of the table ahead of Friday's showdown with arch rivals St Helens.

Fellow winger Jason Robinson also claimed three tries, his fifth Super League hat-trick, as the Warriors pounded out an ominous warning to their play-off rivals with a ruthless 10-try rout.

While Wigan were able to step up their title bid, the season cannot end quickly enough for a patched-up Hull side, who have lost eight of their last 10 matches and must lift themselves to face Bradford Bulls in their final game next Sunday.

Robinson, who has still to confirm his move to rugby union, raced in for three tries in 19 minutes early in the game as Hull conceded a half-century of points at Wigan for the sixth match in a row.

While the wingers led the try spree, it was influential skipper Andy Farrell who once more pulled the strings.

In addition to putting the Great Britain ace through for two of his tries, his pinpoint passing set up first-half scores for Hodgson and Wes Davies while Chris Chester and Hodgson had tries disallowed after collecting superb kicks from the maestro.

Farrell fashioned a second score for 19-year-old Hodgson and kicked his fifth goal to make it 38-0 before the visitors at last got on the scoreboard, courtesy of winger Matt Daylight's well-worked try.

But Farrell was quickly wielding his magic again, sending in Denis Betts and Gary Connolly, who then carved out the opportunity for Hodgson to complete his hat-trick.

Endacott was able to rest Australian Test centre Steve Renouf without noticeably weakening his side, although it was significant that, when Hull's leading try-scorer Steve Collins, breached the home defeat in the first half, it was Kris Radlinski, moving across from centre, who saved the day.

The switch of Radlinski from full-back could be a portent for the World Cup as England ponder a centre partner for Keith Senior.

Wigan were also able to overcome the loss of hooker Terry Newton with a recurrence of his knee injury just 15 minutes into the game.
