6th August 2000: Wakefield 6 Wigan 56

Wakefield Wildats v Wigan Warriors - Tetley's SL V Round 22
Sunday 6th August 2000. Kick Off 3:30pm at Belle Vue

The Warriors kept themselves snapping at the heels of top-of-the-table St Helens with this comfortable victory over lowly Wildcats.

With skipper Andy Farrell in great form as playmaker and goal kicker they dominated the game and after building up a 32-0 interval lead it was only a question of how many points they would run in.

In the end they collected 56 to add to the 68 they scored last week while for the Wildcats the margin of defeat was the same as at Hull last Sunday.

Warriors opened the scoring after just eight minutes with a try by Denis Betts, who followed up a kick through on the last tackle.

They went further ahead with tries from Lee Gilmour in the 11th and 17th minutes and with Farrell adding all three goals they had scored at the rate of a point a minute in the first quarter.

Jason Robinson was the next to score with a try under the posts giving his skipper another easy goal.

On the half-hour Mick Cassidy went over for their fifth try, although it was too far out for Farrell to add the goal and he was also off target when Betts went over for his second try just before half time.

After the break Warriors resumed where they left off with a try under the posts by Mark Smith, then Kris Radlinski joined the try scorers.

After 55 minutes Cats finally got on the scoreboard when Steve Prescott went over for a try from an angled kick ahead. Bobby Goulding added a goal.

But Warriors hit straight back when Smith went in for his second try and Farrell's seventh goal brought up the half-century of points.

Radlinski got his second try to round off the scoring, before a late punch-up involving Tony Mestrov and Warren Jowitt saw both players sin-binned and the incident put on report.
