Halifax Blue Sox v Wigan Warriors - Tetley's Super League V Round 15
Friday 16th June 2000. Kick Off 8:00pm at
The New Shay

Wigan kept up the pressure on their Super League title rivals with a comfortable win over Halifax at The Shay.

Two tries from Gary Connelly secured the points as the Blue Sox's top-five hopes took another blow.

Warriors try machine Brett Dallas and half-back Willie Peters had put the visitors on the way to victory but a Martin Moana score had given the home side hope.

It took Wigan a little while to find their feet, conceding the lead to a Martin Pearson penalty, but they soon gained control and never lost it.

In-form scrum-half Peters was the first to cross after 15 minutes. The former Gateshead half-back wriggled over by the posts after a powerful burst from wingman Dallas.

The same two men were involved again five minutes later when Peters' bomb caused panic in the Blue Sox defence.

Dallas has found himself the subject of some harsh treatment from the Blue Sox pack but he had little trouble in scoring his 16th try of the season. He was given plenty of space as he was allowed to gather and coolly touch down in the corner.

Halifax then came back into the game and had two late chances towards the end of the first half. But, unfortunately for them, scrum-half Andrew Dunemann failed to find player-coach Gary Mercer when through and Mick Cassidy was on hand to deny former team-mate Greg Florimo with a fine tackle.

Blue Sox carried their momentum into the second half and were back in the game within two minutes of the restart.

Dunemann fed Moana for a simple try. The loose forward latched onto his scrum-half's perfect pass and raised his arm as he enjoyed a free run under the posts.

Wigan however weathered the storm and gradually eased themselves back into the driving seat.

Halifax had put them under tremendous pressure but the game turned on Connolly's first try.

The Great Britain centre took advantage of some loose play by winger Phil Hassan as he stole the ball and touched down in the 60th minute.

The game was effectively over as a contest when Chris Chester raced in from the base of the scrum to score against his former club eight minutes later.

Halifax were determined not to let Wigan have it all their own way and came close to a second try but Damian Gibson knocked on at a crucial moment.

Connolly's second try then completed the victory with five minutes remaining and Jamie Bloem's late score was merely consolation for the frustrated Blue Sox.
