Wigan Warriors v Whitehaven Warriors - Silk Cut Challenge Cup Round 4
Sunday 13th February 2000. Kick Off 3:00pm at JJB Stadium

Any hope Whitehaven might have had of pulling off an unlikely shock against the Challenge Cup favourites disappeared inside the opening two minutes at the JJB Stadium. It took Wigan 110 seconds to register the first of 17 tries with Australian star Steve Renouf cashing in on Andy Farrell's break.

By half-time the Northern Ford Premiership side were facing mission impossible as they trailed by 58-4. Another Wigan new boy, former Leeds hooker Terry Newton, darted in for the second before Farrell gifted full-back Kris Radlinski a simple walk-in.

Whitehaven enjoyed a brief moment of glory when stand-off Lee Kiddie touched down chasing his own kick to the line, but luckless Kevin Hetherington hit the post with the conversion attempt. Then the floodgates opened with the Super League giants running in seven more tries before the break.

Radlinski got his second, stand-off Tony Smith raced in for a double and there was one apiece for Jason Robinson, Phil Jones, Brett Dallas and Farrell. Wigan showed little mercy after the break with a non-stop assault on the Whitehaven line which produced another seven tries.

Winger Robinson completed the hat-trick, centre partner Renouf claimed his second while Tony Mestrov, Mick Cassidy, Lee Gilmour and Wes Davies also got in on the scoring act. Skipper Farrell was on top form and deservedly took the man of the match award finishing with a personal tally of 34 points, kicking 15 goals from 17 attempts to add to his try.
