From the 1st set of six Wigan looked like there normal selves and
looking to impress new boss Raper. In fact it took only 3 minuets for
the boys to assert themselves on the game with a try from 15 yards
David Furner running onto a pass from the under-pressure Johns. 6-0.Wigan really did look like a side in control and great defence
quickly turned into attack and timer Denis Betts clung onto a bullet
pass from Andy Farrell the conversion made it 12-0 in the first 10
minuets. The dominance Wigan showed when straight from the kick off
Renouf ran 50 yards, this then eventually lead to a missed Farrell
penalty. But is was all Wigan again from the drop out Brett Dallas ran
the ball back 60 yards but squandered a certain try by trying to go
alone the ball eventually ending up in touch. Wigan though were
looking like the side we all know and love and the third Wigan try was
not far away on the last tackle Dennis Betts leaped like a flying
gazelle to charge down the Hull kick and run in for his second try,
Farrell added the extras.
20 minuets into the game the first Wigan mistake with a Terry
O'Connor forward pass who at this time was the man of the match. This
lead to a Maher score for the Sharks 18-4. Hull for there part did
then start playing some decent Rugby and another Hull try started a
few alarm bells ringing the conversion added 18-10. Wigan then started
looking a bit fragile and Hull came at them, could the defence stand a
barrage of Hull pressure. Yes was the answer a kick from ex Warrior
Tony Smith led to Andy Farrell in his own in goal area he passed yes
passed the ball to Hodgson who ran the ball 40 yards out of the
defence and it was only a Steve Prescott hand that stopped another
Wigan try.
It was however Hull that did finish the half stronger. But the half
time score was 18-10.
Hull started the second knowing that there was a game to win as
Wigan looked like a different side as the Sharks came as Wigan, the
next score would be vital. It was Wigan who came good following
another onslaught by Hull. Brett Dalls who looked shaky from the bomb
caught and ran 60 yards up the field and maybe would have scored if he
wasn't shot by a Japanese Samurai, but we were in from the next tackle
Newton passed to Renouf who went over Faz missed the kick It was two
in two minuets Hodgson to Renouf to Radlinski who scored in his 200th
game for Wigan easy does it Faz added two more 28-10 55 minutes gone,
all over now I hope.
It was after an hour after a run from the very quiet Gary Connolly
opened the Wigan defence passed to Brett Dalls who carried the ball
over conversion made 34-10. Further converted tries from Renouf and a
last minute Connolly effort made the score at the final whistle of
46-10.
Yes the score looked good but there are still a couple of questions
game from the game. WHY IS MATTHEW JOHNS IN THE SIDE? and How good was
Terry Newton back at hooker?. Raper certainly has some work to do but
on the whole a convincing victory. You can look at it another way
apart from 25 minuets at the end of the first and start of the second
we dominated a side second in the league. Well done lads. Roll on
Friday and Castleford.
