Wigan Warriors v Wakefield Wildcats - Tetley's Super League VI Round 9
Friday 4th May 2001. Kick Off
8:00pm at JJB Stadium

Match Report by Andy Ellis (wiganwarriors.rivals.net)

Wigan have bounced back from their defeat at the hands of London last weekend with a 50-6 victory over Wakefield on Friday night. The Broncos' shock victory conspired to knock Wigan off the top of the league table, but the Warriors have given their fans the perfect tonic with this win over a determined Wildcats outfit, who continued to pressure in attack and deserved more for their efforts on the night. Wigan opened the scoring early on thanks to a try from Kris Radlinski, who followed through on Adrian Lam's clever kick, with Farrell's conversion making 6-0.

Radlinski then returned the compliment shortly after, as he started the move that allowed Lam to cross for Wigan's second. Farrell missed on that occasion, but was on target with a penalty moments later to make it 12-0. Steve Renouf then added a third to give the Warriors a commanding 18-0 lead at the break, with Wakefield always looking for opportunities but never capitalizing thanks to some stout defence from the home side. Gary Connolly then added to Wakefield's woes early in the second half, with David Furner also crossing after fifteen minutes to ensure there was no comeback for the Wildcats. Farrell added to both of those two, and then got in on the act himself mid-way through the half, crashing through from a scrum and converting to give the Warriors a 36-0 lead.

The Wildcats were not to be denied a try however, as at last David March found himself on the end of a Willie Poching pass to cross for a deserved score, Dorahy converting. But Wigan refused to relent, and powered up the field once more to allow Brett Dallas the space to sprint over at the right-hand corner. Farrell, who seemed to be everywhere on the night, was then on hand to help the Warriors to the final try of the night, with his pass giving Radlinski his second of the game, and the conversion, along with a second penalty, bringing up the half century for the home side. That win means Wigan go back top the top of the table, with Bradford set to take on Castleford on Saturday. Wakefield meanwhile, lie stranded in seventh place despite once again showing signs that they are capable of living with the best.
